A classic STEM education (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) was long regarded as the foundation for a successful career. Yet over the past decade the realisation has taken hold that subject knowledge alone is no longer enough to master the complex challenges of the future world of work. In an era where knowledge develops at extreme speed and specific factual knowledge quickly becomes outdated, future skills such as problem-solving ability, teamwork and creativity in particular are coming ever more to the fore.

To close this gap, the STEM concept is increasingly being expanded through the integration of art. STEM becomes STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics), or MINKT (MINT und Kunst) in German-speaking contexts. Numerous studies now confirm that creativity and an interest in science and technology are far more strongly linked than is generally assumed. Strong performance in the STEM field and creative potential show a clear correlation.
A key to motivating young women
The creative approach holds particularly great potential for motivating girls and young women. In computer science and technology in particular, women remain strongly underrepresented, which carries serious economic and social consequences. Embedding technical questions in contexts more commonly associated with women, such as art or fashion, proves to be a promising approach here.
"Girls and women who consider themselves creative take a particular interest in mathematics, science, computer science and technology. They can be inspired for the world of programming especially through creative offerings."
Practical experience from statewide programmes such as the "Girls' Digital Camps" confirms this approach: participants can be motivated for computer-science topics significantly more when these are conveyed through an artistic and creative route. The combination of craft, problem-solving and creative freedom breaks down barriers while at the same time fostering the decisive future skills.
